Why Choose an Open Source ePortfolio?

There are different reasons to choose an Open Source ePortfolio platforms: personal value (some believe that software should be free), budget (although 'open source' does not always equate to 'free'), quality of the platform, etc. If you don't want to manage a server to host your own ePortfolio platform, you can use the services of a platform or server provider.
  • Mahara Mahara is an open source e-portfolio system with a flexible display framework. Mahara, meaning 'think' or 'thought' in Te Reo Māori, is user centred environment with a permissions framework that enables different views of an e-portfolio to be easily managed. Mahara also features a weblog, resume builder and social networking system, connecting users and creating online learner communities. (note for technicians: Mahara integrates seamlessly with Moodle through a SAML plugin.)
  • Moofolio is a Moodle block that provides a platform for students and teachers to collect and reflect on portfolio artifacts. It is available as a solution for schools to implement the NH ICT Literacy standards. SPDC provides training on installing and configuring Moodle, adding the Portfolio module, administration, and teacher use of Moodle for online classrooms and the Portfolio.

Instead of using a dedicated ePortfolio platform it is possible to use an open source content management system (CMS) like Plone or Drupal. A study from Donau University compares the features of a number of ePortfolio platforms with standard content management systems.
