The project ATS2020 (Assessment of Transversal Skills 2020) aims at creating a model for student learning and the assessment of transversal skills. Coordinated by the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute (Anastasia Economou), the project will implement the model in about 25 schools in each of the 10 participating piloting countries. This large scale experiment will be accompanied by a CPD programme for teachers, impact evaluation and policy recommendations at national and EU levels.The kickoff for ATS2020 took place in March 2015 in Limassol, Cyprus. While the first phase of work was mainly devoted to agree on a set of skills which will be the basis of the framework and the experimentation, the second partner meeting in Ljubljana had an additional focus on technology and tools for the support of the assessment process for lower secondary students and teachers. On the basis of a – still ongoing – desktop research the partners agreed on using ePortfolios as a basis for assessment. The February 5th 2015 Cand.Cur. Kirsten Nielsen defended her PHD titled “Learning of nursing skills in clinical education mediated by ePortfolio " at the University of Southern Denmark.The PhD project is a qualitative empirical study of how and to what extent an e-portfolio promotes learning of clinical nursing skills. Data is generated by field studies on clinical placements at the Hospital Unit West and in Holstebro. The informants are eleven nursing students in Module 4 by Nursing Training Center in Holstebro, Denmark. The purpose was to investigate the learning of nursing in clinical training mediated by an ePortfolio designed to facilitate different learning styles.ResultsThe investigation pointers to factors that promote and inhibit portfolio use. The compulsory part of ePortfolio promotes awareness of level of own learning, learning needs and overview of learning material. 1. The problemThe assessment of clinical trainings (knowledge, skills and attitudes) carried out by nursing school professors and health centers, allowed to identify changes in the attitudes' area and the need to reinforce some formative aspects.At the same time, we changed the study plan and thanks to the design and the implementation of the ePortfolio’s project, we could contribute (1) to a reflection on the students' performance as for their learning process and (2) to the academic tutor's orientation and guidance.2. The objective of the Matrix is to help organisations with the integration of ePortfolios and Open Badges as a means to transform educational practices. A large part of the matrix does not make any direct reference to ePortfolios or Badges, but to the underpinning elements related to pedagogical practices and ICT integration. Also, the Matrix aims at engaging organisations to reflect on their practices. Therefore it should be understood as a blue‐print from which customised matrices could be designed to suit the particular context of an organisation or a community.
Practice
At the Aarhus university in Denmark, when academic staff is hired, they are asked for their research qualifications. This is still regarded as the most important grounds for hiring. But as part of the university’s strategy academic staff is since 2005 also asked to supply a teaching portfolio.A teaching portfolio is defined on the website of Aarhus University as “a description of the applicant's specific teaching experience and evaluations. The use of teaching portfolio serves a dual purpose: first, to provide applicants with the opportunity to consider and document their teaching experience and qualifications, and secondly to give the evaluation committees a more solid basis for the evaluation of the same. On 3 June 2015, the Europortfolio community organized a webinar in which I talked about the future of Mahara, the open source ePortfolio system. The presentation consisted of three parts:Overview of what Mahara is;How features make it into Mahara;The high level roadmap for Mahara.Mahara was started by New Zealand tertiary institutions in 2006 and has been an open source project from the start. Since its humble beginnings in a far-away country almost ten years ago, it has spread around the world and is used in hundreds of schools, universities, other tertiary providers, professional organizations and projects around the world. Mahara users can be found on all continents but Antarctica.In true open source fashion, anyone, including YOU, can contribute to the project. And contributors do not need to be programmers. There are many different ways of contributing to an open source project because a software development project does not only consist of programmers.
